Validation in the horror show?

Welcome guest blogger Rance Piatt, who will contribute his own thoughts and words on Wildcats hoops ...

Rick Pitino's stint in Lexington was highlighted by a dominant four-year run that was punctuated by a national championship in 1996 and was a Nazr Mohammed free throw away from a repeat the following season. But that success did little more than feed the national reputation of Pitino as "the next Larry Brown" with the annual spring NBA offers. As such, Kentucky fans found themselves in the awkward predicament of alternating delight and consternation that their head coach would win his way right out of town en route to a bigger and better place.

Maybe it's the low self esteem of a state often the butt of negative stereotypes, but in the summer of 1997 the Kentucky fanbase realized their worst fears when Pitino took the head job in Boston.

We fans cussed and kicked the trash cans. We were equally angry (for having been discarded) and confused (there's a bigger, better job?). Regardless, we trudged on ... some more willing than others to accept our new head coach, Tubby Smith.

There were all kinds of reasons to like the hire. In one gesture, AD C.M. Newton had (one would hope) wiped clean the slate of debate regarding race within the UK program and install at its head a man respected for his coaching and loved for his character.

But deep down, the fanbase harbored some fear. It was painted by the media -- and in some cases rightfully so -- as a deep resentment borne of an unwillingness to buy into the "black man's" system. But that is a small segment of the fanbase. Really, it is.

As distance grew from Smith's inaugural season and the school's 7th national title, the majority feared a backslide. They saw 10-loss seasons eating into the progress Pitino had made since the program emerged from the dark days of NCAA probation in the late 80s.

For the national media, it was fuel for the fire. Kentucky fans are relentless and irrational. There is no "good enough" for the hillbillies of Kentuck'. There is nothing that will quiet these people unless you win it all. EVERY YEAR! Especially for the racists of Kentucky.

To be fair, that just wan't the case. Consider it another example of the media oversimplifying something they neither cared enough to look into or saw as genuine enough to take note. And it wasn't just the media. A healthy portion of the fans fought against this.

I was one.

We saw brighter days ahead and were duped into accepting lesser-talent recruits because of Smith's success with less-heralded recruits Erik Daniels, Gerald Fitch and Cliff Hawkins. What we discounted was the presence of experienced talent (Bogans, Keith) and a tough-minded physical leader (Hayes, Chuck).

As Kentucky slip-slides its way off the bubble, most unfamiliar territory indeed, are Kentucky fans to find any validation in their concerns of the stewardship of their program now that we have neither the experienced talent nor the tough-minded leadership (let alone anything resembling physical play) on the court? Or are they to be further ridiculed for questioning a respected man?

I'm betting the latter, unfortunately. Even good guys can screw up.

Kentucky fans are unfortunately tarred with the perception of sins past. It sucks but it is, as they say, a fact of life.

You ask if Kentucky fans are "to find validation in their concerns of the stewardship of their program". I think this is the kind of question that begets the media stereotype of Kentucky fans as the example of intolerance and ignorance. Of course fans have the right to have concerns and be upset about a lousy season. But the outrageous clammor for Smith's job aught to embarass any right-thinking individual familiar with the man and his record. It is no wonder the national media scoffs at the vehement and unreasonable attitude of (unfortunately) too many Kentucky fans.

Tubby Smith has been an excellent role model for the young men on his team, and is one of the few coaches I have seen who will suspend a critical player for an important game at any time during the season for poor academic performance during the preceding week.

Great coaches have bad years, and no doubt Tubby can thank his indifferent (some might justifiably say "borderline incompetent") recruiting for this painful lesson. I think perhaps Tubby has a more lofty opinion of his ability to get players to play above early expectations than he sould have. If he is the man I think he is, this season should be a lesson in humility he'll never forget.

Next year's recruiting class is very good with a chance to be excellent. We have had some tough luck with injuries and distractions with this team that have had predictable results on team unity and depth - Rekalin Sims is still suffering from a bulging disc (an injury from which he may never recover), Morris was held out half the season and is still gathering steam, and Crawford had a knee injury which still hasn't fully healed. The failure of the junior class to perform is well documented.

None of these is an excuse for poor execution, and Kentucky's conditioning is not what it should be. These are coaching issues as well as player issues that must be addressed. As fans, we have a right to expect changes that will produce results from Tubby and his staff, including changes to his staff.

Do you recall back before we tapped Pitino for the job, we asked 'ol Loot Olson to be our coach, and he said, "No," to our great embarassment (but ultimately, to our great benefit). Look at where his team is this year - but also notice that I don't hear Arizona fans demanding Olson must go. To the media, this is just grist for the mill to validate thier concerns that Kentucky has fools for fans.

Great coaches have bad years, just like great players do. This is one, hopefully the last in a long time for Smith.

Pittino is a rich guy now. He was great w/ the PC Friars 20 years ago. Now, he's washed up.

You'll not that nowhere in my comments did I ever call for Smith's job. I'm simply interested in the perception of the fan base.

But I am curious why it is so outrageous for the segment of Kentucky fans that are calling for Smith's job. Why? Just because Arizona Wildcat fans are not calling for Lute Olson's head (and they actually are, by the way, especially after recently forbidding his players to shoot the three) does not indict the Kentucky fans who are. You're comparing Pac-10 basketball to the only sport that matters for most UK fans. It's what makes it great and terrible at the same time.

Look, let's be honest...we're talking sports here. The very nature of the enterprise requires several players (coaches, players, officials and fans) in an elaborate theatre. Just as coaches intruct the players and the players make the plays which are judged by the officials, fans react. That's what we do. That's the role.

Well, sometimes the movie stinks. Sometimes you sit down with your popcorn and Jim Carey is loathesome as the Grinch. Big deal. Doesn't mean I hate the dude. Doesn't mean I don't like him personally.

Guess what? This version of the Kentucky Wildcats stinks. It's a pair of Rajon Rondo buzzer-beaters away from terrible. That's not really up for debate, I don't think...unless you're a Hoosier. But then you've got your own thing going on.

This team didn't just happen. This season is the result of four seasons of scattershot recruiting. And why is this lesson in humility such a great thing? Are you telling me he didn't learn enough of the lesson with Team Turmoil? How often are we going to go through these "lesson seasons?"

Injuries happen. Suspensions happen. Players graduate. Villanova lost their best player to injury and are vying for a top seed in the tourney. North Carolina lost its top seven players and kicked our tails at home. I've yet to see any evidence that Smith has been dealt a tough hand that he hasn't had some part in predetermining his situation.

Just because the roster you have recruited over four years doesn't fit your system doesn't mean you get some blank pass.

And despite what you say about next year's class, there is nothing there to suggest the holes will be filled. We still have no small forward. And calling Crawford a small forward doesn't make him so. He is a shooting guard.

Power forward? We're banking on a 180-lb freshman. Hardly the rock to which you want to anchor the ship.

Look, Smith is not going anywhere this offseason. He's earned the right to fix this situation. However, I do have concerns about where this is all heading and how it will play out. Doesn't mean I don't like, respect or admire the man.

    Rance, you said:

The reason I find the constant call for Smith's job outrageous is because of a) his record and b) the general outrageousness of calling for any basketball coach's job when they have one down season after many good or excellent ones. The fact that many of Kentucky's fans have been doing so even during years where we had outstanding success makes it doubly revolting. And the argument that Smith just hasn't met what some fans call "Kentucky's standards of success" is just plain revisionist history and utterly meritless as an argument.

Your point that Arizona's situation "doesn't indict Kentucky fans" is a fair one, and while I have been extremely critical of the vocal and growing minority of fans demanding Smith be fired, I am in no way suggesting that Kentucky fans don't have a right to act outrageously (my opinion) - they do. I just vehemently disagree for all the aforestated reasons.

For the record, I also agree with you that this year's version of the Wildcats stinks - they simply do. Who really knows why? It's not all bad recruiting (although I agree that's a major factor), some of it is a lack of an intangible (call it leadership, sacrifice, heart, whatever) that we had in spades for the last three years but seem to be completely missing now. Some of it is bad coaching - I think Smith has got to rethink his approach to coaching after the Chuck Hayes years - things have changed, and Smith has apparently not recognized how much.

    You said:
"I've yet to see any evidence that Smith has been dealt a tough hand that he hasn't had some part in predetermining his situation."

I hope you aren't imputing such a suggestion to my previous post, because it isn't in there. I mentioned these things because they are facts that are significant in the debacle that is this season. Smith most certainly carries a big chunk of the responsibility for this unsatisfactory campaign. My point was that factors beyond his control have played a larger role in this season's problems than his detractors acknowledge.

    You said:

There are a couple of things there that encourage me. I think Perry Stevens will be as good as advertised defensively, and let's face it - defense is what this program needs right now. I love Patrick Sparks, but reality must intrude - he is a defensive liability of the highest order. Today's point guards are not only quicker than Sparks by an order of magnitude, but they are taller and more athletic as well. I consider perimeter defense our biggest weakness at the moment, and the two defensive-minded combo guards we have coming in should help significantly.

Are all our holes plugged? Not by a long shot. But then again, we still have a spot for one more player if my math is right. Hope springs eternal...

Fair enough. My big point was in response to your question at the end of your post, not your own opinions (which, by the way, I barely know - you have only made one post and one comment that I have had the pleasure of reading), which I found to be a false choice between the right to fair criticism of Smith and unfair media criticism for saying anything at all.

Words have consequences - so does passion free of reason, which is what we have in so many fans here in Kentucky, and unfortunately, those fans are heard. It's nice to see, though, that you aren't among them. I hope you don't think I was placing you there.

Perhaps if more fans would utter something more intelligible (and intelligent) than, "Drain the tub!", the media wouldn't be so quick to stereotype Kentucky fans as rubes.
